FAVORITE OUTDOOR SPOTS TO GRAB A BITE IN VÄSTERÅS

Where: Västerås
When: Summer
What: Outdoor places to eat

We love spending time in nature, and sometimes that means enjoying a cozy terrace. Today, I'm sharing our favorite outdoor spots around Västerås to grab a bite in the lovely Swedish nature.

When we moved to Västerås, we explored a lot to get to know the area. We stumbled upon a charming hidden gem here and there nestled in the beautiful Swedish landscape, often only open during the summer. As a newcomer, you might miss them, so today, I’m spilling the beans.

WESTERQWARN

In Kolbäck, just outside Västerås, you'll find one of the most famous and largest mills in Västmanland, Westerqwarn. Here, you can enjoy a freshly baked sourdough wood-fired pizza, a salad, or an ice cream from the ice cream bar right in the middle of nature. Planning a holiday? Westerqwarn offers camper spots with all the necessary facilities, including a mini-golf course, and a large outdoor stage that regularly hosts concerts. Bonus tip: At Christmas, you can enjoy a cozy traditional Swedish julbord here.

UNDER STORA EKEN

On the outskirts of Västerås, you'll feel like Pippi Longstocking in this enchanting garden with lovely little nooks everywhere. Enjoy a tasty Swedish fika and feel free to bring your kids and/or dog—they’ll love it here. This is literally a playground in the middle of nature. Keep an eye on Under Stora Eken's Facebook page for upcoming events.

ÄNGSÖ FISK

Ängsö Nature Reserve is a must for a hike in beautiful surroundings. You can also visit Ängsö Slott on this island. The best part is that you can enjoy freshly smoked fish from Ängsö Fisk at a picnic table in the sunshine during the summer. Not lunchtime? It's always a good time for fika or ice cream! It's also a great stop during or after a hike, as Ängsö Fisk is located on a lovely walking route. The rest of the year, you can order (smoked) fish from the butik or kiosk to enjoy at home.

WÅFFELBAREN BJÖRNÖGÅRDEN

I love taking a lunch walk on Björnö with our dog. We sometimes rent gear here to enjoy Mälaren actively. But on this lovely island, there's also a waffle bar where the most wonderful and delicious creations are freshly made for you. From enormous and colorful waffles with ice cream and other goodies to delicious savory waffles that are a feast for the eyes. For a smaller appetite, you can also get a lovely fika here. You can enjoy these treats on the outdoor terrace and water for your dog after a walk is always available.

STRÖMSHOLM MARKETENTERI

Right in the midst of the horse buzz at Strömsholm, you'll find this cozy bakery. It's a great spot for a delicious fika, and in the summer, you can enjoy a traditional Swedish lunch in the garden. Many riders come here for lunch, and occasionally someone passes by with a horse, adding to the lovely atmosphere. Marketenteri is located close to Strömsholm Slott, so if you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit. As is the beautiful surrounding nature, perfect for a walk.

ÅSKERBRO GÅRD

In Kolbäck, you'll also find this charming dog-friendly cafe with a gift boutique. As soon as you walk in, it's clear that dogs are warmly welcomed here – there's even a dog menu! You can enjoy Swedish favorites, but there are also fun and surprisingly healthy options, even for fika. The gift boutique has several rooms with cozy corners, cute clothing, and other knick-knacks. Highly recommended!

BARBECUE SPOTS IN NATURE

Okay, this tip is a bit different, but it shouldn't be missed. All over nature in Sweden, you'll find fantastic barbecue spots, often fully equipped with wood, an axe, seating, a grill grate, and sometimes even a toilet. This means you'll need to do some culinary work yourself, but food cooked over a wood fire doesn't need much extra to taste great, and... have I mentioned the stunning locations of these grill spots? I'll leave a link to a map with all the barbecue spots in Sweden at the end of this blog post :-)

I hope I’ve inspired you to get out and visit one of these hidden gems this summer. Have fun!
